What Are Garage Opener Travel Limits?
Opener travel limits tell the motor exactly how far along the steel rail to pull the trolley before stopping. The "Up Limit" determines where the door stops when open (it should sit level with the header), and the "Down Limit" determines where it sits when closed (it should create a snug seal against the concrete floor without compressing the rubber weather stripping excessively).
Method A: Adjusting Mechanical Openers (Screw Dials)
If you have a slightly older opener, look at the side or rear casing of your motor. You will see two plastic slotted dial screws marked "UP LIMIT" and "DOWN LIMIT" alongside directional arrows. One full turn of the dial screw typically equals 2 inches of door travel.
- If the door reverses upon hitting the floor: Turn the Down Limit screw counter-clockwise (upward arrow) to decrease the travel range.
- If the door leaves a gap at the bottom: Turn the Down Limit screw clockwise (downward arrow) to increase the down travel range.
Method B: Adjusting Modern Digital Openers (Push Buttons)
Modern smart openers (like the LiftMaster Elite Series) use digital limits. Locate the adjustment console panel on the motor. It typically features a black square button between an Up arrow and a Down arrow.
- Press and hold the black adjustment button until the Up arrow blinks, indicating programming mode.
- Press and hold the Up arrow until the door is in the desired fully open position, then press the black button to save.
After every travel limit adjustment, you must test the safety reversal system! Place a 2x4 wood block flat on your driveway directly under the center of the opening. Close the door via remote. When the bottom panel strikes the wood block, the door must stop and reverse immediately back to the open position. If it crushes the wood or slips, your force limits are set dangerously high.
