The part of a visit that comes before the repair is taking the door out of service, and we run it the same way at every address, because each step decides what the next one is allowed to touch. The door goes to one position and is left there, chosen so nothing is resting where a hand has to go. What a narrow band of build years buys is two clocks instead of ten. At the census median build year of 1985, an opening framed with its house has been in use 41 years, and the 1980s are the biggest block on the table — 2,188 of the 4,434 units, just under half of them. The 1970s run about a decade longer than that, and the two of them together account for 3,297 of everything counted, so the sum lands in one of two spans rather than any of ten. Where the original equipment is still up, it has been going up and down for about as long from one street to the next. That is arithmetic on a published year and it stops there: it does not say what has been swapped since, or in what order, or what any of it is doing now — two houses finished the same summer can be one owner and three jobs apart. The year is the one thing we can know before turning into the driveway, and the order above is how we find out the rest.
