Garage door work in Carlsbad

Take the floor first, because in a garage everything vertical is referenced to it. The bottom section comes to rest on the slab, so how the concrete runs across the full width of the opening decides whether the door lands flat or sets one corner down first. The lift cables dead-end at brackets on that same bottom edge. And a height the trade publishes a number for is measured off that same surface: DASMA's six-inch rule, which says the photoelectric sensors either side of the opening must not be installed higher than six inches above the garage floor. Above the garage floor means above the concrete under that sensor — not above the bracket it is clamped to, and not above whichever end of the slab happens to sit high. It is worth naming whose rule that is: DASMA publishes the figure and manufacturers put it in their installation instructions, while the federal text covering openers hands the mounting height back to those instructions rather than printing a number of its own.

What the census can tell us about Carlsbad stops a long way short of any of that. There are 47,460 housing units on the record, and three separate decades built about the same number of them: the 10,127 homes counted from the 1970s, the 10,583 from the 1980s and the 10,819 from the 2000s sit 692 units apart end to end, against a margin of 1,213 on that difference. So the table has a largest single count in it and no characteristic era. The 1990s is the one period in that stretch the census does separate out, at 6,662 units, under all three of those counts by more than the sampling error printed on the pair. The median build year is 1988, which is 38 years of opening and closing wherever the door is still the one the opening was built for. And the two summary figures land on top of one another: 15,066 units were standing before 1980 and 15,149 have gone up since 2000, 31.7% and 31.9% of the stock — 83 units apart, against a margin of 1,420 on the difference between the two runs. It will not say which end of this town is the bigger one, so neither will we.

Which leaves the quote built from the bottom up rather than from the year on the house. Three decades of building here are level with one another, so the street outside narrows nothing down, and no part of a door gets picked off an address. What settles it is a tape and a level at the garage: where the door sits down across the full width, whether the two bottom corners arrive together, what the track is fastened into on each side, and where those two sensors are actually sitting relative to the concrete beneath them. Of all of it, the sensor height is the only figure we can look up before we get there.
