A third of everything still standing in Carson went up inside one decade. That is a fixed stock. The two newest rows of the table are 787 homes from the 2010s and 140 from 2020 or later, 927 units between them, so the housing in this city has barely changed in a generation. Anything fitted to a garage here is being fitted to something that was already standing.

The opener overhead is counted a different way, and not locally. When the Consumer Product Safety Commission published its final rule on residential garage door operators in December 1992, it put the stock in use across the United States at 27 million units or more, 19 million of which had been made since 1982, with 1990 shipments running at up to 2.5 million. Most of the operators in the country at that date had been built inside the previous ten years, and the same rule counts that year's shipments in the millions. That is a product still spreading fast, at a moment when four homes in five in Carson had already been standing for more than a decade. The rule never discusses builders or new construction, and what it counts is units in circulation rather than addresses — so it cannot say which of these houses got a machine, or when one went up there.

Which leaves the older half of the job documented and the newer half not. Springs, cables, rollers, hinges, the track they run in and the head unit above them are all equipment, each with a date of its own that is not the building's, and they have arrived over the opening in whatever order the last sixty years happened to take. No table records that, here or anywhere. It gets established under the door instead — what is hanging there, what it is doing, and what has already been changed once — and the work is quoted off that rather than off a decade.
