Every job has a line in it between the work that can be walked back and the work that cannot, and knowing where that line falls is most of what keeps one visit to one visit. On the near side of it: running the door up and down, uncoupling the trolley at the manual release, lifting the door by hand, pulling the cover off the head unit, a level across a section, a tape on the track and the drums. Any of that can be left the way it was found. The sequence does not change between a house finished in the 1950s and one finished in the 2000s — the reversible questions first, the committing steps after them — but what comes off the van is settled at the opening rather than on the way over. Which parts those turn out to be is the last thing decided on the job rather than the first. When a figure finally does go on an order, it is one measured off the door standing in front of us, because whatever that figure said is what comes out of the box.
