An opener can be changed without anything else in the garage being touched — a keypad somebody wanted, a quieter drive, a unit that stopped while every part it had been pulling stayed where it was. So the date on the machine is a date on the machine. It does not reach the hinges, it does not reach the cables, and it does not reach whatever is carrying the door's weight. The inference we decline to make is the one running the other way: that because the machine over the car went in recently, the parts it pulls on must be in similar shape. There is nothing in that. A unit fitted last year replaced a motor, and it inspected nothing on its way up. Even about itself it settles less than people expect — whether a handset or a board for it can still be had is a question about the model on the label, not about the year the machine went in.

Coachella's record draws the same line at city scale, and on the building side of it the census is emphatic. It counts 12,543 housing units here and puts 5,040 of them up between 2000 and 2009 — a single ten-year block larger than everything in the city that was already standing before 1980, which comes to 3,283 units, a difference of 1,757 against a margin of 693 on it. 47.9% of the housing was finished in 2000 or later and 26.2% of it before 1980, either side of a median build year of 1998 that carries a margin of three years. On paper this is a new town. None of it describes a single piece of equipment.

What the building's date does settle is a ceiling on service time, and that is the one genuinely useful thing on the table. Nothing in a garage can have been installed before the garage was, so on the 5,040 homes finished in the 2000s here, nothing in any of them has been in place longer than 26 years — not the machine, not the counterbalance, not the track. At the far end of the same table there is no such ceiling to have. The oldest period the census publishes is 1939 or earlier, and that one has no floor under it, so among the 3,283 homes standing before 1980 there is no common limit the record can put on any of them.

So the two dates get weighed differently on a call here. The machine is taken on its own terms: what it is, how it is fastened to the framing, what it has been set to do at each end of its travel, and whether it is doing that. Everything it pulls on is taken on the door's terms — the hinges between the sections, the rollers, the cables where they wind onto the drums, the bearings the shaft turns in, the line the track holds on each side. The building's date caps how long any of that can have been up there. Nothing on any table records what has been done to it since.
