A garage door job has two halves and they came out of different trades. The opening is framing — a header across the top, a jamb up each side, a slab underneath — and all of it was built to what a wall and a floor have to do. The door and its hardware are a mechanism, and a mechanism has to be true to itself: the two vertical tracks holding the same spacing to each other the whole way down and the same standoff from the sections, rollers running in them without climbing or dragging, a shaft sitting level right across the opening, two drums paying out both cables at the same rate. Nothing on the second list is set by the first. It gets lined up against the door itself and then packed out off the jambs wherever the two sides of the opening disagree, and that packing out is the fit.

The framing here is old and the census is decided about when it went up. Which does less for a quote than it looks as though it should. Houses put up within a few years of each other were put up to the same practice, and that is where the sameness stops. The fit in any one of these garages is the product of whatever was done the last time the track came off it, set to the door that was on it at the time — and a header keeps the holes from that work, while the slab keeps its own line across the opening whatever gets hung above it. Two openings of the same age can want the track packed out in different places and by different amounts, and nothing in a build year, an address or a photograph of the outside of the door says where or how much.

A fit that is out does not stop a door, and that is why it is not the thing that gets reported. It shows up as effort — an opener pulling harder than the door should need, a roller running against one edge of its track, one cable coming up slack while the other stays tight. All of that is read with the door moving and from inside the garage, and what it settles is whether the next part goes straight on or whether what that part runs in has to be lined up first. On housing this old the lining up is part of the visit rather than an addition to it.
