There is one rule holding the order together: nothing new gets done to the door until the last thing that changed has been tested on its own. Rollers come out and go back in, and then the trolley is uncoupled at the manual release and the door is lifted and lowered by hand, so that whatever it does is down to the rollers and to nothing else in the garage. Cables re-seated at the drums, the same again — by hand first, before the machine is allowed a say in it. A limit setting moved on the head unit, and the door goes end to end under power once, on its own, before a second setting is touched. Every step closes on a yes or a no, and the one after it starts from a door whose behavior is already known.

Bundling the work is faster on the day and it gets paid for afterwards. Change three things in one pass and a door that still binds hands you three suspects instead of one, while a door that stops binding tells you only that it stopped. The test between changes is where the whole diagnosis comes from, so it is not something to save up for the end. The door is the instrument. What it does by hand, what it does under power, where it was let go of and where it went — that gets written down as it happens, because it is evidence about one change only for as long as one change is all that has been made.

Crescent City's census table is more definite about its thin rows than about its full ones. The Bureau counts 2,088 housing units here, give or take 165, and of the nine steps from one build period to the next, four come out clear of the survey's own error — all four of them an edge of the same two thin rows. It records 421 units from the 1950s against 51 from the 1960s, a difference of 370 where the sampling error on that subtraction is 165, and 38 from the 1940s against 300 already standing in 1939 or earlier, 262 apart with 159 of error. Ask the same table which of the full rows is the largest and it will not answer. The 1980s show 428 units, the 1950s 421, the 1970s 413, 1939 or earlier 300 and the 1990s 256, and no two of those five stand far enough apart for the census to put one over another. The widest pair of the five is 428 against 256, 172 units apart with 223 of sampling error on the difference. So what this record is sure of is where its own count runs thin, and that is not something anybody can use standing in a driveway.

Which leaves the sequence carrying the job, and it is the same sequence at every address. Springs, cables, drums, rollers, hinges, bearings, track, sections and the opener overhead are each fitted to a measurement taken in that garage, one change at a time, with a run of the door in between. Where a part has to be ordered, the figure it is ordered against is one somebody wrote down off the door, not off a build year.
