So the work is staged by where a person has to be standing to answer the question in front of them. The call and the address come first because they cost nothing, and what they settle is access rather than parts — which way the door quit, whether the release has already been pulled, whether there is a car shut in the garage. Then the closed door from outside: how it sits in the opening, whether the bottom edge came down square, what can be seen of the track and the outer face. The newest row does not resolve at all: an estimate of 38 units from 2020 or later, against a margin of 41 on it. Read as shares, the same table gives 50.6% before 1980 and 8.1% from 2000 on.

And that is where the address stops. What has been changed over any one opening since the house was finished — how often, in what order, by whom — is not in that table, not on the deed, and not written into any other record. That is not a hole in the census. It is an instrument stopping where it can no longer see, and printing the edge it stopped at. A door is owed the same treatment. The year is worth exactly what it is: a date with a margin on it, about a building rather than about a door.

So there is one question worth putting to anybody who works on your door, us included. Where were you standing when you decided that? Springs, cables, drums, rollers, hinges, track, sections and openers each answer to a particular place in the garage, and an answer given from further out than the part it is about is a guess with a number on it.
