A broken sensor wire and a dead control board look identical from the wall button, so on an opener call the thin wire gets tested before the motor gets blamed.

Garage door work in Danville

Start at the ceiling, and start with the thin wire rather than the motor. An opener runs on low-voltage circuits that have nothing to do with the cord in the ceiling receptacle: one pair of thin conductors down the wall to the push button, and where a pair of photo eyes is fitted across the opening, a second pair out along the jambs to those. They land on terminals at the head unit, at the far end of a run somebody stapled along a joist and down the framing, sometimes with a splice in it where the wire had to be lengthened. From the button, a fault anywhere on either circuit presents as the machine itself — the door heads down and comes straight back up, or a light flashes and nothing moves, or the button does nothing at all — and the head unit gets the blame mostly because it is the part with a model number on it.

The census cannot help with any of that, and it is otherwise about as definite here as these profiles get. Of 15,909 housing units, 4,987 were built between 1970 and 1979 and 4,237 in the 1990s — 750 apart, against a margin of 603 on that difference — which puts the 1970s clear of every other decade in Danville rather than tied with one, and 1979 is where the median across the whole table lands, on a margin of a single year. The recent end of the table is thin next to that: 924 units across the three periods since 2000, 5.8% of the housing, where 53.1% of it was already up before 1980. What no row of it records is which machine is hanging over the car, or who ran the wire to it, or where they put the splice.

So the order of work on a call here runs from the wire inward, and the first question at the terminals is how many circuits are landing on them at all. What is wired across an opening is a fact about the unit hanging in that garage rather than something an address predicts, and its absence is as much of a finding as a break in it. From there, brackets get looked at for the knock that pushed an eye out of line, and each circuit gets read at the head unit's terminals instead of at the button, because the terminals are the one place a circuit can be proved without guessing which end of it is at fault. A staple driven through insulation, a corroded splice behind a shelf, a conductor snapped inside insulation that still looks perfect, and a pair of terminals with a jumper across them all read the same way at the button and differently at the terminals. A meter, a length of low-voltage wire and a few connectors settle that, and none of them is a head unit. If it does turn out to be the board or the drive gear, that gets named as its own job — along with anything the door is doing on its own account, on rollers, hinges, cables, springs and track.
