A garage door does not object to being repaired for the wrong reason. Fit a new roller because the door is grinding, when what grinds it is a length of track pulled off line where it meets the jamb, and the noise drops away for a while — a new wheel has clearance the old one had lost. Nothing has been put right. The track is where it always was, the new roller is being worked the way the old one was, and the part just fitted is now the last thing in that garage anybody will think to suspect.

The cost of a wrong answer is seldom paid by the part it was spent on. Everything up there is fitted to something else — a hinge across two sections, a bracket into a jamb, a cable onto its drum — so where the fault sits in what a part bears on, a new part does not end it, it joins in. Set a hinge square across a joint that is no longer square and the pin takes the difference. Put a bracket back a fraction off where it came from and the door runs perfectly well, while the track above it and the section either side take up what has moved. None of that announces itself on the day. It arrives later as a separate complaint about a different end of the door, and by then more of the door is in it than was in the original fault.

Nothing printed about Vallejo settles any of that, though the printed record does show neatly how a confident figure can point the wrong way. No period on that table holds more of the city than the 1980s, at 10,147 of the 46,395 units counted, and the 2,452 putting them ahead of the 7,695 recorded for the 1970s carries 1,011 of error, which leaves it comfortably clear — a lead the census will own. It is also an answer to a question hardly anybody is asking, because half of everything counted was standing by 1975, one year of margin printed on that median, and 58.6% of it predates 1980 altogether. The commonest decade in Vallejo is not the middle of Vallejo, and a figure that is right about the one is wrong about the other. A door, and what has gone wrong with it, sits further off still.

Which sets the end of a visit as much as the start of it. A door that has just been worked on gets run and watched at the places nobody called about — the joints along the sections, the track above the repair, the brackets that were never loosened — because that is where a wrong answer would be sitting, and it would not be sitting there today. The part that was fitted is the least informative thing in the garage. Everything around it is where the door tells you whether the right question got answered.
