A visit follows one order every time, and the first thing on the list barely counts as a step: the door gets run in the state it was left in, opener still coupled to it, until whatever the call was about happens in front of us. Only then does anything come apart, and it comes apart one connection at a time. The middle of the whole record is a build year of 1991, published with two years of margin either side.

All of that is a measurement of buildings, taken once, with a margin printed against every row of it. It carries nothing about how many times the equipment over any one opening has been changed since, or in what order, and nothing published records that either. So the certainty gets built on site the way the survey builds its own — one comparison at a time, each one clearing what it has to clear before the next is drawn. On a door that means getting the fault to show itself while everything is still bolted and plugged in as we found it, which is the part of this a caller can do for us: leave it alone, note whether the wall button and the handset behave the same way, and let it happen once more with somebody standing there.
