So the first pass in a garage here is a read of the contact surfaces, done with a light rather than by feel. A roller that has stopped turning polishes one patch of its own face and one line in the track beneath it, and that is not the mark left by a roller that turns with too much play in its stem. A lift cable that has been riding out of its groove leaves the print of the old wrap on the drum. What no mark will give you is a date. It says what has been going on and not when it began, and nothing published converts one into the other.

Dates are the half a public record can supply, and this one supplies them with two rows nailed down.
