Del Rey Oaks has two build eras the census will stand behind — 361 homes from the 1950s and 108 from the 1980s — and five rows on the same table that it puts in no order whatever.

Two things can be holding a garage door up, and which one it is decides how the visit goes. A torsion spring is wound onto a shaft that runs above the opening, with a lift cable coming off a drum at each end and running down to a bracket at the bottom corner of the door. Extension springs do the same work from somewhere else, stretched along the horizontal track on either side and pulling through a pulley and a cable of their own. Neither is safe to unbolt with the tension still in it, and nothing about an address in Del Rey Oaks says which one is up there, so a call here starts with a look at the header and back along the tracks.

What is found there sets the rest of it. Drums, pulleys, cable ends and the fixings they dead-end into belong to one system or the other, and the counterbalance itself is wound or stretched for one particular door on one particular opening. So the early part of the work is reading what is already bolted up: whether the two sides match, whether a section in the middle of the stack has been changed, whether the vertical track still stands where it was set. A much smaller one sits thirty years further on, 108 units from the 1980s against 34 through the 1970s and 10 through the 1990s, gaps of 74 and 98 with 33 and 29 of error on them. Past 1990 the survey settles little: the 24 counted from the 2000s and the 10 from the 1990s are 14 apart, and the error the census carries on that comparison is 27. The two newest lines are published as an estimate of zero rather than as a count of nothing.

All of that dates buildings. A door swapped at some point since, or an opener put up long after the house was finished, leaves the row it came out of exactly where it was, so no published figure says which counterbalance is over an opening here or how much tension is sitting in it. Those are quick questions with a ladder under them and slow ones to guess at from the year on a house. So we bring the ladder.
