Identify what your door is doing before you call. If it is one of these, do not keep operating it.
Your torsion spring has snapped under intense torsional load. Forcing the opener to lift the door without spring assistance will burn out the motor or snap the drive belt.
A lift cable has slipped off the drum or a roller bearing has seized and popped out. Operating the door in this state can completely drop the heavy panels.
A stripped internal nylon drive gear or a blown starting capacitor. We carry complete carriage gear rebuild kits in our trucks to repair your system immediately.
Don't let a snapped spring, snapped cable, ripped weather seal, or a defective remote keep you locked inside. Our expert teams carry fully stocked dispatch trucks. We regularly perform comprehensive garage door maintenance (inspection, lubrication, adjustment, and component testing) to keep your system safe. We serve Monterey and the cities around it.
A photograph of the garage door settles more than people expect and less than they hope, and it is worth knowing which half is which before you walk out and take one. A picture is good at shape. Where the door is sitting — shut, stopped part way, one side of it hanging lower than the other — reads straight off an image. So does damage with an outline to it: a section pushed in, a track pulled away from what it is bolted to, a cable gone slack where it should be wound onto its drum, a hinge torn out of the panel it was screwed to. So does whether something is there at all, like the two sensors that ought to be down near the floor either side of the opening.
What no picture carries is force, and force is most of this job. A counterbalance set right for the door and one running light look the same in an image. How hard the opener is having to pull has no appearance whatever. Whether the bolts behind a bracket still have their grip in the framing gets answered by putting a wrench on them, not by looking at them. And an image is one frozen instant of a machine whose complaint is nearly always about what it does while it is moving.
The house behind the door will not fill that gap either, and Monterey's record is a fair demonstration of it. Its census table runs to 13,760 housing units, 70.1% of them finished before 1980, and the year at its middle is 1970, carrying a two-year margin. An untouched door and opener on a house from around then are therefore something like 56 years into the job — which is elapsed time, and elapsed time is the only thing a build year gives anybody. It says nothing about which door is on the opening today, and nothing about the section, the springs or the machine that somebody swapped out on a date no table kept.
So send the picture. It is worth having: we arrive knowing how the door is sitting, what has visibly let go, and what is fitted, which takes a good deal of the guesswork out of what comes off the truck. What it cannot do is stand in for the visit, because the three things this work turns on — weight, tension and travel — will none of them hold still for a camera.
